BURNESIDE Reserves from the third division gave a good account in a 5-3 defeat in the Westmorland Junior Cup playing Wetheriggs Reserves, who are riding high above them in the second division.
Wetheriggs got off to a good start in the quarter-fina tie, taking a 1-0 lead early in the first half only for Burneside to get straight back at them when Shaun Knowles burst through from midfield to slot home. Wetheriggs again went in front after a mix-up when the ball stuck in the mud and an attacker rounded Paul McCullock in Burneside's goal to net.
After a rousing half-time team talk, Burneside again pushed forward and within 10 minutes had equalised when Gary Bigland put across a pin-point corner to the back post for Shaun Knowles to power home his header.
Wetheriggs rallied and forced a third goal for a 3-2 lead but Burneside were not to be outdone and Paul Duckett bore down on the Wetheriggs goalkeeper for a 50-50 ball which spilled to Callum Marshall. His shot was scooped out from under the bar only for the loose ball to fell to Darren Huck to make it 3-3.
Burneside pushed on for a fourth goal but Wetheriggs weathered the storm and grabbed the lead again against the run of play.
With nothing to lose, Burneside were caught out as they forged upfield as hat-trick scorer Coleman beat the offside trap for Wetheriggs' fifth.
