FORMER South Lakeland schoolboy Magnus Lund (Sale Sharks) earned a deserved share of of the accolades which fell mainly to comeback kid Jonnny Wilkinson after England's 42-20 Calcutta Cup win over Scotland.

But to serious analysts of the sport, the 6ft 3in Lund's performance at openside flanker was worthy of note and Lund did everything he could to make it so, including scoring the last of England's tries.

Many commentators in the national press picked out Lund's impressive contribution as one of the highlights of England's first match in this year's Six Nations Tournament.

Magnus said: "The result was certainly a platform we can build on.

"Everyone worked hard. The crowd were amazing; we could hear everyone behind us the whole game and Jonny (Wilkinson) certainly helped us with that as did Jason with the first try.

"We now have to keep our feet on the ground. We have got a long way to go, but it was a great start and a step in the right direction."

Lund, who attended schools in Kendal and Staveley, where his mother Ena still lives, had fallen somewhat out of favour with the former regime, but England's new coach Brian Ashton put his faith in the Sale man, along with his team-mate Jason Robinson, and was and amply rewarded.

Ar article in the Times by Stephen Jones said: "Lund had a wonderfully effective game. He was a splendid link between backs and forwards, popping up to keep continuity.

"He was excellent on the loose ball, an impressive feat for someone who is, at 6ft 3in, slightly taller than the average world-class openside.

"For someone who is reasonably willowy in build, he also tackled emphatically hard, once sending Kelly Brown into reverse when the strapping flanker tried to get Scotland moving over the advantage line."
