A TRIO of Cumbria-based girls assembled at the Ponds Forge National 50m long course pool for the City of Sheffield Premier Meet at the weekend, with one of them coming out on top in the 50m sprint.
Sister act Victoria and Georgia Hevey, of Staveley, competed for Loughborough University and City of Liverpool respectively, while Charlotte Hill, of Witherslack, represented Plymouth Leander.
It was County champion Victoria Hevey who caught the attention of the crowd in the 50m sprint. She hit a personal best of 30.36secs to beat the county record and qualify for the final, where she shone.
Superb skill and technique gave Hevey the edge as she stormed to the finish. She held off competition from Charlotte Read for a magnificent win in 30.28secs.
She then went on to gain a creditable fourth place in the 100m backstroke in a time of 1:06.69. She also put up a fine performance in the 50m freestyle with a time of 28.24secs.
Sister Georgia Hevey was also in great form and came away with some impressive results. With a fantastic effort in the 100m backstroke, she took 15th place in 1:10.15. Although well down the field in the 50m freestyle with a time of 29.61, it remained a hard-fought result.
Hill’s power and strength combined with skill and hard work saw her take on the more formidable events of 100m and 200m backstroke, and 200m and 400m freestyle. Her best result came from the 400m freestyle where she kept up a lung-bursting pace to take a brilliant eighth in 4:29.81.
