Universal Credit is being rolled out across Cumbria in the near future. So what is it, and how will you be affected?
Universal Credit is a new benefit that the Government says will make welfare simpler and make work pay. It is a single benefit that will eventually replace Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.
It is paid monthly, usually direct into a bank or building society account, and will include rent that you will then pay to your Landlord yourself. If you live with a partner and both claim Universal Credit then you’ll receive a single payment to cover both of you.
The rollout starts for new claims and changes of circumstances. Gradually all other benefit claims will be transferred over the next 2 years, the Government will write to tell you when.
Citizens Advice are here to help if you have any problems or questions. Applications will be made online, and we know that many people struggle with using a computer.
Any change of circumstance must be reported within strict timescales – if you don’t do it properly you can miss out on some of your benefit payment. Getting your benefit paid monthly instead of weekly might cause you problems.
If this is the case, we have a range of service that can help you. If you have any questions about Universal Credit and how it will impact on you, please contact us.
