TRAINS had to be halted as multiple fire crews battled a blaze on the side of a railway track this morning.
Bentham fire station was called to the report of a track side fire at just after 11am today (June 22).
On arrival the crew found 20 metres of banking alight, with the wind driving the flames further.
Skipton fire station was contacted for assistance and a request was submitted to network rail to stop the trains while firefighters attempted to extinguish the fire.
A spokesman from Bentham fire station said: “Our crew initially attacked it from a distance until the confirmation of trains being stopped.
“Skipton arrived and spotters were put in both directions whilst the crew moved to the track side to tackle from each end.
“A really good effort by both crews. Several of our hoses tested yesterday were used, confirming the importance of checking our kit.
“An incident like this would have been a great example for what3words.”
