HERE are the latest announcements from our community news correspondent Myra McCraith for Grasmere.
THE WI has had a very busy week. At the June meeting, Sue Allen of Wordsworth Grasmere spoke about plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Dorothy Wordsworth's birth.
A lively discussion followed, contrasting Dorothy's experience with the lives of women in the village today and discussing ways in which the WI might contribute to the exhibition later this year.
President Sue Dixon and other members joined the virtual annual meeting of the national federation to hear fascinating speeches by three inspiring women: Dame Cressida Dick; Sophie, HRH Countess of Wessex, and Baroness (Judge) Brenda Hale; followed by an excellent talk in support of this year's resolution to increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer by consultant gynaecological oncology surgeon John Butler.
WI MEMBERS Louise Sykes and Jackie Godfrey, together with the late Jan Perritt's daughter Jo, joined a group of adventurers who climbed Scafell Pike at night to raise funds for St Mary's Hospice.
The threesome raised more than £3000 and raised a champagne toast to Jan on the summit at sunrise.
A tea party to be held in Jan's memory will raise further funds for this wonderful local charity.
WI RAMBLERS and friends meet at Moss Parrock to set off on a local walk, followed by tea. (Thursday, June 17, 2pm).
RUSHBEARING will remain virtual this year, via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram - and displays in the Co-op and local shops.
See notice boards and social media for further details nearer the time (Saturday, July 10).
KNIT and Nat crafters are now meeting in person in the Reading Rooms.
Join them for tea, crafting and friendly conversation on the second and fourth Tuesday each month (June 22, 2-4pm).
