A CAMPSITE in Bowness is looking to make a plethora of upgrades and improvements and has submitted the plans to the Lake District National Park Authority.

This campsite, based on Glebe Road, was previously named Braithwaite Fold and has been changed to Bowness on Windermere. The site will be undergoing a refurbishment during 2021 which these plans would be part of.

The plan is for the reconfiguration and upgrading of pitches within the main site, extension to existing amenities block, reception office, road widening at site entrance, provision of two managers pitches, bin store and tractor shed, a motorhome waste and water point, provision of a water point, car parking area, and a site security barrier.

The design and access statement said: "The proposed site upgrades and improvements are an opportunity to continue to improve the standard of facilities available onsite, in turn contributing to its longevity, ongoing contribution to the locality and enhance visitor experience.

"An analysis of the site and area has been undertaken to inform the development proposals, to seek to ensure that the site's existing strengths and opportunities are further enhanced as a result of the proposals including:

• Upgrading of facilities to serve this well-established site which is well located to serve the area and allow visitors to experience the heritage of the Lake District.

• Upgrading of facilities to serve the Site that will contribute to its continued success and longevity by providing accommodation that visitor desire without needing additional land for new facilities.

"The purpose of the development is to improve the provision of existing on-site facilities to help the longevity of the site, which allow the Club to continue to contribute to the economy.

"The NPPF promotes sustainable development, which is defined as having three dimensions: economic, social and environmental.

"The proposed development of the application site is considered to represent sustainable development, contributing to the three strands of sustainability and providing a series of benefits."

The popular camp is on the shores of Lake Windermere and allows visitors to explore the southern lakes from the site.

The idea behind these plans is to enhance the visitor experience. Their other argument for the proposals to be approved is that it is to the benefit of the local economy.

A report said: "Visitor expenditure was considered in the research report where it was found that visitors staying in rented or touring accommodation (average 4.6 nights per trip) spent an average of £46 per day off-site i.e. in the local economy, assuming a high occupation of the proposed site for a total of 200 nights for all 85 pitches, this would equate to a potential benefit to the local economy of £1.38 million per annum."

No decision has yet been made on this application.
