A CONISTON lady will be sampling the life of a Syrian refugee as she undertakes The Ration Challenge.
Adele Harris, 31, an assistant teacher at Coniston Primary School, will undertake the week-long challenge that will see her live on the diet that a Syrian refugee would have to live on while crossing borders to Britain.
Starting on June 30, Adele will only have 1.92kg of rice, 400g of flour, 170g of lentils, 85g of dried chickpeas, 120g of tinned sardines, 400g of tinned kidney beans and 330ml of vegetable oil to eat for seven days.
This is the diet that the average refugee may have to live on.
Adele will not be allowed anything else in her diet, such as coffee, chocolate, or milk, unless she raises enough money to gain more, just as a refugee would have to do by relying on charitable organisations.
She is a mother of two and has recently qualified as a teacher.
Adele said: “I saw the challenge being advertised and had a look into it. While many of us have had a terrible time of it this year we must not forget that other people in the world are suffering so much worse.
“I hope it can bring some perspective back to us.
“The way it works is the more sponsors you get the more food you can get.
“Syrian refugees would rely on charity so that’s what I’m doing with the challenge. The more charity you get the more food you can get. If you got £75 you could get some salt for the week, or more vegetables to choose from.
“I’m going to start on the 30th which will be a Sunday and do the challenge for a week.
“To get ready for it I’ve cutting down on the amount of caffeine I have because I won’t be allowed to have any over the week.
“I think it will be a good experience because we tend to take a lot for granted.
“Originally, I wanted to raise £100, but got up to £150 already. I think now I’ll aim for £250. Every penny counts for these things.
“To get £500 would be mind-blowing.
“The night before I’ll plan a diet plan and get a recipe book which came with the ration packs. All my friends and family have been really supportive and I’m so grateful to everyone who donated already.”
