Hundreds of people lined the streets of Brough as the Olympic Torch reached Cumbria.
Olympic fever gripped the small town with people grabbing the opportunity to take part in a moment of history.
Up to 400 children from Upper Eden Schools waved Union Jack flags and cheered at the top of their lungs after enjoying their very own mini-Olympics at Brough Primary School.
Headteacher Lesley Whittle said: ”The excitement since the announcement was made about the route has been building and now the children are fit to burst.
“It’s absolutely fantastic and I hope they can take a little piece of the Olympic spirit home with them.”
Two of the UK’s 8,000 torchbearers beamed with pride as they helped to pass on the eternal flame.
Michael Hall brought the torch across the town border, cheered on by family and friends who had travelled from County Durham.
Mum Wendy said: “It is a proud day for us.”
Torchbearer Edward Haughey of Durham admitted to being ‘a bit nervous’ before taking on the flame and carrying it out of Brough where the torch will carry onto Appleby.
One of the spectators Jane Sayer of Kirkby Stephen said: “This sort of thing doesn’t happen every day and it’s good for the town.”
Penrith and the Border’s MP Rory Stewart marked the day by revealing a commemorative plaque in Main Street.
