GUESTS staying at an Eden bed and breakfast will be taken back in time this Jubilee weekend.
Tebay’s Old School Tea Room and Bed and Breakfast has put together a 1950s display, focusing on food popular at the time of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.
A bunting-clad room in the historic building boasts a selection of old cookery books, recipes and a dining table including scones and china teacups.
Jo Nugent, who runs the establishment with her partner Steve Dunkinson, explained how the idea came about.
“A lady in the village called Hilary Wilson approached me and said she had this massive collection of cookery books and could I think of anything to do with it,” she said.
“A lot of people are doing things around the Queen, but I wanted to use the cookery books.”
Ms Nugent said the display had been enjoyed by visitors as they could see which types of food would have been around in 1953.
“The social history you can get from food is amazing,” she added.
Special afternoon tea menus are on offer at the venue throughout Jubilee weekend, plus five-course banquets based on food served when the Queen was crowned, including coronation chicken.
Other events in Tebay include a street party, bouncy castles, games, beacon lighting and fireworks on Monday.
Children from Tebay Community Primary School, which itself is celebrating a special anniversary this year – marking its centenary – have produced homemade bunting from different fabric to decorate the village.
