STUDENTS from Giggleswick School have been selected to feature as one of just 20 worldwide productions at the International Student Drama Festival in Sheffield in June.
A group of pupils from the school formed the With Wings Theatre Company three years ago and a production of Sad Since Tuesday won the best musical narrative at the Nat-ional Student Drama Festival in 2009.
Now the original members — Tom Coxon, Dominic Blake, Chloe Crenigan, Tom Figgins and Christian Eccles-Cannon — have recruited past and present Giggleswick thespians and they have been joined for their 2012 show, If Room Enough, by Mark Portnell, Isobel Jones, Josh Wells and Harriet Belk.
Helen Lindley, teacher and artistic director for the scho-ol’s Richard Whiteley Theatre, said she was delighted the company was involved for a second time as its adap-tation of The Tempest showed how a 400-year-old play could be transformed.
She added: “They are so ind-ividually talented that when they are together the results are stunning.
“I think it is a testament to not only lifelong friendships made at Giggleswick but artistic respect for each other and an absolute love of creating theatre. It is more than a pleasure to work with them and I am glad that the Richard Whiteley Theatre could offer support.
“When the company entered the festival in 2009 they were the only project that was below undergraduate level and they have come back this time to get others on board for the international festival.”
Mrs Lindley said there would be further rehearsals in June before two days of rigorous performance at the festival.
They will then receive feedback and questions on their production at a forum at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre before taking their play to The Edinburgh Fringe.
She added: “The fact the students all loved drama and the experience was so strong is brilliant. It is great for the school that, despite the fact they have gone on to do different courses (science and politics), they have come back to focus on their drama and theatre background.”
