AN EDEN secondary school has become the first academy in the UK to have chosen a co-operative model.
Kirkby Stephen Grammar, which was previously a co-operative trust, became an academy in August, and the new status allows the local community to retain control over the school.
Julie Thorpe, head of school and youth programmes, said: “It is great to see Kirkby Stephen established as the first co-operative converter academy.
"It means that while it has independent status it will remain owned and controlled by stakeholders – the students, staff, parents, and community.”
Kirkby Stephen school’s co-operative partners are Appleby Heritage Centre, the University of Cumbria, the Co-op Group and Sports Leaders UK, and it also works closely with Kirkby Stephen [rimary school.
Head teacher David Keetley said: “The model will provide the community with a stronger voice in provision in this area and help shape future developments.
“We will build on our partnerships and work with new partners for the benefit of all our pupils and the community.
"The freedoms offered by becoming an academy bring greater financial security and more options for our small school.”
