KIRKBIE Kendal School pupils are a ‘credit to young people’ according to a top education boss speaking at the annual prizegiving ceremony.
Julia Morrison, director of Cumbria children’s services, delivered the praise as guest of honour role at the event, which saw dozens of former students return to school.
After presenting last year’s Year 13 students with academic and sport-ing prizes she said: “It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the achieve-ments of the students at school in academic excel-lence including the arts and sports, as well as for service to others. You are a credit to young people in Cumbria.”
Head teacher Phil Hyman took to the stand to recount a year of triumphs in all areas of school life with special mention of the school production of Grease and a Beatles concert which raised £1,500 for a mini-bus for a South African creche.
Academic success was also celebrated and Mr Hyman said this year’s results – which included an A level pass rate of 84 per cent A* - C – made him ‘extrememly proud’.
He awarded the head teacher’s prizes to former head girl and boy Beth-any Fleetwood and Andrew Pinkney, who both start university this month.
“They were awarded the prize for service to the school in their roles and for being superb ambassadors at all events,” he said.
Bethany also won the Lamont Pidmore prize as the best business studies student of the year.
Looking to the future Mr Hyman said the school was now entering a ‘changed educational landscape’ following its conversion to academy status in April.
“We are pleased to be an academy and believe that the future autonomy that it gives us will enable us to enhance our partnership work as an integral part of the South Lakes Federation of Schools.”
