A 78-YEAR-OLD man is fighting for his life in hospital after a 'head-on' accident at Thirlmere last night.
The accident happened at about 5.55pm on the A591 alongside the lake when a blue Fiat Punto was involved in a collision with a blue Ford Focus C-Max.
The local pensioner was trapped in his car and once freed was flown by The Great North Air Ambulance to James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, with serious multiple fractures of his arm and leg, and with possible pelvic and spinal fractures.
His wife was taken to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, with serious injuries.
There were four people in the Focus and a female passenger was taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 0845 3300247.
