A MAN has today admitted causing the death of a woman by careless driving.
Gary Smith, 36, of Colt House Lane, Ulverston pleaded guilty at Preston Crown Court to a charge of causing the death of Hazel Mary Lindow by driving a vehicle carelessly on Central Drive, Walney Island, on November 30, 2009.
The case has been adjourned until February 4 for the preparation of pre-sentence reports by the probation service.
Jeremy Grout-Smith, prosecuting, told the court it was a case of inattention.
Defence barrister Francis Nance said Smith took around 2.6 seconds to react to the woman stepping off the kerb.
Smith was remanded on unconditional bail by Judge Stuart Baker.
The judge indicated that all the court's sentencing options would be open.
"For this offence, with this particularly sad consequence, a custodial sentence is one of those options", he said.
The judge imposed an interim driving ban.
