SOUTH Lakeland District Council hopes to develop a closer relationship with communities as part of a new five-year strategy.

In light of budget cuts, SLDC will look at how it can reduce costs and work in new ways enabling communities and organisations to deliver services if they want to.

SLDC already has eight successful Local Area Partnerships (LAPs) which allow residents to decide how council money is spent in their area. The new five-year strategy builds on this principal.

The Cabinet agreed the new strategy to create a closer working relationship with partners, public and private sector organisations and communities by 2016.

Phillipa Cook, SLDC Corporate Director, Vision and Strategy, said: “This strategy looks beyond the short term budget cuts to shape a council that can continue to deliver for local communities in the future.

“Our vision for the council hasn’t changed but the economic climate and Government thinking has, so this strategy addresses those changes.

“It outlines what we want to do and how we can do it in response to these changes and follows three themes; partnership working, working with our communities and delivering value for money services.”
