TWO South Lakeland men travelled to Buckingham Palace today to receieve honours from the Queen.

Jeff Cowton, Curator at the Wordsworth Trust, was awarded an MBE for services to museums after working for the Trust for 30 years.

He was commended for caring for one of the world's great literary collections and building up an incredible store of knowledge and expertise.

A spokesperson from the Trust said: “Jeff's first thought has always been to share that knowledge with others. Consequently, thousands of people - visitors of all ages, researchers, colleagues at the Trust and in the wider museum sector, members of the local community - have benefited from Jeff's generosity and enthusiasm.”

His 12 month educational Interns Programme is said to have inspired hundreds of young people to pursue careers in museums and in the arts.

District Judge Gordon Ashton from Grange was awarded an OBE for services to the administration of justice and to disabled people.

Mr Ashton has worked as a District Judge since 1992 and also became a Judge of the Court of Protection.

A regular speaker on representing disabled people in court he has also written several books about the law and elderly people including The Law Society’s Elderly Client Handbook.

He was previously a partner at solicitors Gedye and Sons in Grange.
