A REDUNDANT pub in Ulverston town centre could be brought back to life by an exciting new venture.

Seven new jobs could be created at the Bradylls Arms, in Market Place, if Roger Chattaway’s plans for a new hotel are approved by South Lakeland District Council.

The landlord of the award-winning Farmers Arms wants to change the former pub, which has been closed for two years, into a hotel – as he believes there is a gap in the market.

He hopes to convert the Grade II listed building and add six extra rooms, making a total of 14. The Farmers Arms already offers accommodation at three cottages in the town, but he is keen to add to this.

“We don’t have many rooms available, and there seems to be a demand for them,” said Mr Chattaway.

“There are people working in the area who need somewhere to stay, for example.

WThe hotel would also have a dining area downstairs for guests – there is nothing like this in the town.”

The Bradylls Arms has been empty since Steve and Vanessa Fleming called time on their pub in January 2009, saying increased rates and the cost of beer had killed off the business.

At the time, owners Enterprise Inns said they would not be reopening the building as a pub, and it has laid dormant ever since.

If the plan wins the green light, external alterations would be made, including a new detached annexe, and improvements would be made to access at the back of the building.

There would be on-site parking for 12 vehicles for guests.

Mr Chattaway added: “My intention is to do this building up to make Ulverston more attractive, and hopefully bring more people into the town in the process.”

A decision on the application is expected in the new year.
