A PLANNING application for a refurbishment of Kendal’s oldest building has been lodged with South Lakeland District Council.
Kendal College wants to revamp the former Castle Dairy restaurant on Wildman Street and turn it into an arts hub.
Work on the Grade I listed building will run in tandem with a regeneration scheme on Wildman Street where the college plans to link together the Allen Building and Kendal Museum and build a new performing arts space with recording studios, light and sound facilities, a reception room and toilets.
English Heritage recently reclassified the 16th century building as being ‘at risk’ and has given a £40,000 grant towards the project.
“There has been a lot of local support towards the project as it will bring more people into to the area, who will go into shops and restaurants,” said college principal Graham Wilkinson.
