GRASMERE police officers will join forces with local traders to tackle shoplifting in the lead up to Christmas.

Following an increase in shoplifting throughout the summer, a ‘Shopwatch’ scheme has been launched to deter offenders and prevent thefts.

The network will pass information about crimes and suspicious individuals between police and shop owners. Photographs and CCTV will also be used so locals are fully informed and able to catch prolific offenders.

PCSO Laura Jackson said: “Sadly local trade suffered from shoplifters during the summer who we believe were attracted to the area due to the large amount of outdoor clothing stores selling expensive brands to busy crowds.

“South Lakes is always very popular with visitors and we want to be proactive and stop crime before it happens this Christmas. We believe that some of the local thefts occur when criminals travel into the area so by working together and circulating information about suspicious individuals or vehicles, we hope to deter criminals and catch offenders when crimes are committed.

“Shopwatch operates very successfully in other areas and we hope to replicate this success to prevent crime in South Lakes.”
