FREEZING temperatures are continuing to make driving treacherous across Cumbria.

Residents awoke to find snow had fallen during the early hours of Saturday morning and police are warning motorists to take care in icy conditions.

On Saturday the Kendal Mountain Rescue team was called out to help an ambulance which was struggling in ice.

It was unable to reach an elderly man who was unconscious after a fall at his home in Underbarrow. The team transported the patient to the ambulance.

Despite Met Office predictions that the region would avoid the snow fall which has affected other parts of the UK, the region woke up on Saturday to find nearly half a foot of snow had fallen.

Gritters were out in force from the early hours to clear main roads, but conditions on minor roads and estate roads are said to be hazardous.

The Met Office did issue a severe weather warning on Friday, ahead of the snowfall.

But that was lifted just before 7am the following morning and forecasters say that while no further snow fall is expected, temperatures will remain below freezing into next week.

While main roads are currently clear, police are urging motorists to take care when driving.

Drivers are reminded that they should carry out simple vehicle checks before they set out; carry a severe weather emergency kit in their vehicles; monitor the traffic and weather conditions and plan their journeys.
