AN ‘INSULTING’ comment near a burger van led to an early morning attack on an innocent bystander.
Thomas Spedding, a member of Ulverston Amateur Rugby League club, mistakenly thought the insult was aimed at him and squirted ketchup on a man standing nearby.
When asked why he had done that, he punched Andrew Warne full in the face.
The 20-year-old defendant of Back Casson Street was placed on a community order by a judge at Preston Crown Court after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
His sentence will involve twelve months supervision and the Cumbria Alcohol Awareness Intervention Programme.
The judge, Recorder Andrew Menary QC, told him: “This must have been a frightening episode for Mr Warne, given that it came from nowhere.”
