FIVE people have been arrested and bailed after a brick was thrown from a bridge across the M6 in north Lancashire, shattering a car windscreen.

Around 3pm on Saturday, the brick was thrown by a group of people from the last bridge before junction 34 on the northbound carriageway.

It hit a black Mitsubishi Outlander causing the windscreen to completely shatter, but the driver managed to pull onto the hard shoulder.

Although the occupants of the car, two men and a woman from Liverpool, were not physically injured, they were showered with glass and left shaken by what had happened.

PC Bruce Irvine said: "This is an incredibly serious offence which could have had potentially fatal consequences.

"The occupants of the vehicle were extremely lucky not to have been physically hurt, as well other people on the motorway at that time.

"I would appeal to anybody who may have witnessed this incident to contact police.

"I would also like to speak with anybody who may have seen a group of people on the bridge around 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

"It is believed one of them may have been on a bike."

A Morecambe man, 22, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, recklessly endangering life.

Two Lancaster boys, 16 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of damaging property with intent to endanger life.

A man, 19, from Morecambe was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, recklessly endangering life and a boy, 17, of Lancaster was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

All have been bailed.
