Tim Farron has been elected as the President of the Liberal Democrat Party.
The Westmorland and Lonsdale MP received 14,593 votes to Susan Kramer's 12,950.
The news was welcomed by Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
He said: “I’m delighted that Tim Farron has been elected in an open internal contest – a democratic process that sets us apart from other parties.
“I look forward to working with our new President as he oversees the organisation and management of our party.”
Mr Farron, of Milnthorpe, said: “I’ve got a tough act to follow in Ros Scott who has been an outstanding President.
“I also want to say a huge thank you to Susan Kramer who made sure that this was a really energetic and thoughtful election contest.
“My job now is to work extremely closely with our Leader Nick Clegg to make certain that our distinctive and radical voice as Liberal Democrats is heard – and that we get the credit we deserve for making such a difference in Government."
