TWO sporty brothers proved their dedication when they climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest in South Lakeland.

Josh and Tom Betoin took part in the third annual Climb for Kendal, where people of all ages attempt the 50m ascent up Allhallows Lane to the top of Beast Banks 177 times – equal to climbing the world’s highest mountain which stands at 8,848m.

The event raises funds for Mayor John Veevers charities, the Kendal Mountain Rescue Team and Kendal Riversiders Club.

But before most people had begun their efforts, Josh and Tom could be seen running up and down the steep road from the crack of dawn in order to make sure they completed the task on time.

Josh, 16, said: “I wouldn’t say it was enjoyable but it was definitely worthwhile. It was tough physically but it was more a mental than a physical effort. It was a case of telling ourselves to keep going and not to stop.”

Both are familiar with the efforts involved with sporting activities, as Josh plays rugby for Kendal under-17s, and Tom, 14, turns out for both the under-15s and his team at Queen Katherine School.

The brothers decided to get sponsorship for a different charity – Get Kids Going – which helps gives disabled children a chance to participate in sport. And between them they raised more than £430.

Meanwhile, Coun Veevers climbed Beast Banks many times during the fun event and on one occasion was stretchered back down by Kendal Mountain Rescue Team volunteers.

He said: “There’s been a great atmosphere. The weather’s been kind and so more people have ventured out to support us this time.
