THE man fronting the coalition Government’s ‘Big Society’ idea awarded a South Lakeland school a national prize for its charity work.
The Minister for Civil Society, Nick Hurd, presented students from Queen Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale, a Giving Nation Social Action Award and a £500 cash prize at a ceremony at HM Treasury in London.
The school has organised more than 20 fundraising, volunteering and campaigning events in support of charities such as Haiti Relief and Cancer Research.
At the ceremony a student representative from the school told the audience of MPs, corporates and partner organisations that the award was an amazing achievement that the school is very proud of.
“We know that most schools spend a lot of time and energy each year to raise money, campaign and volunteer for outside causes,” said Richard John, of Giving Nation. “Unfortunately most schools struggle to find an effective way of recording, sharing and celebrating these achievements with their community and that is where the Giving Nation Awards supports schools.”
