BORIS Johnson and Sir Cliff Richard are just two of the celebrities set to feature in a new book written by an Eden couple raising crucial funds for children living in Africa.

Retired vicar Christopher Jenkin, 73, and his wife Mary, 63, of Orton, have already tried a variety of fundraising ideas to raise money for street children they witnessed living in poverty and hardship in Uganda.

From running marathons to organising community events the couple have been working hard for two years to raise money to build a hostel for homeless children living in Kasese, western Uganda.

It will not only provide shelter but also an opportunity for training and education.

The enterprising couple have now decided to write a book filled with people’s answers to the question ‘’What is your favourite thing?’, with the proceeds going towards the hostel.

The Archbishop of York as well as former politician and BBC presenter Gyles Brandreth, have confirmed their involvement in the book.

Mr Jenkin said:“I have written to a lot of people to get their support and we have heard back from quite a lot already.

“We are still looking for a publisher but we would ideally like the book to be out by Christmas: “We were extremely touched by the street kids’ struggle.

“Some would have to sleep in the trees, most of them were orphans whose parents have died from either AIDS or Malaria, lots have been mentally and physically abused.”

“I felt it was the most practical way to help these kids,” said Mr Jenkin. “It is a project that will hopefully stop them getting into petty crime and save them from the streets.”

The building work has gained momentum with the hostel’s frames and roof already completed.

Also, a leading Ugandan politician has pledged his support to running the hostel once it is open.
