MORE than 600 residents have helped to paint a South Lakeland town in all the colours of the rainbow for a unique arts project.

Locals in Ulverston have got right behind a ‘Profound Colours’ project – launched at Lanternhouse in Ulverston – asking residents to name a colour which they associated with the town.

More than 1,700 ideas were submitted and all of the shades will be featured in a special edition book, with photographs representing the colours, which will then be delivered free to 5,500 homes in October.

Copies of the book will also be available for visitors to see at the Lanternhouse base in The Ellers.

The men behind the project are Kartoon Kings Simon Grennan and Christopher Sperandio, who have collaborated on major public arts projects in New York, Berlin, Lisbon, San Francisco and Chicago before coming to Cumbria.

“I would really like to thank the people of UIverston for getting involved because the results are amazing,” said Mr Grennan.

“We know Cumbria is very beautiful and the traditional images we see of it, but if you create a book of a town’s colours, it is something quite different to what people have seen before.

“What’s coming across is that Ulverston people really love the intensity of the weather, and the clarity and uniqueness of the light, as well as its geographical uniqueness. The book will be a real mirror of society in Ulverston.”

Special events are now being planned for October when the book starts being delivered.
