AN EDEN village believed to be one of the furthest places away from a curry house has had a taste of the spicy stuff.
A mobile takeaway van rolled into Orton on Tuesday as iconic Indian beer brand Cobra brought a taste of Asia to locals they believed would be ready for a curry fix.
In the first hour only a handful of villagers turned up for a free meal and organisers began to worry there might be a reason why it was a curry-free zone.
But eventually 50 villagers got into the spirit of the promotion and some even dropped by in tractors to pick up a free chicken korma.
Despite the UK boasting 9,000 curry houses, villagers in Orton have to make a 20-mile round trip to reach their nearest curry house in Penrith or Kendal.
Mum Megan Cotton-Dew said: “I don’t even know where our nearest takeaway place is.
"It would be good to live somewhere as picturesque as this and have all the facilities you’d expect of a town.
"Orton could then be famous for chocs and curry.”
