Fifty years ago a number of nervous 11 year-old boys started secondary education when they became pupils at Heversham School.
Now a group will be celebrating when they meet for dinner at the Crooklands Hotel on Friday night (June 18).
It is the general reunuion weekend for the school and on Saturday night there will be another dinner, also at the Crooklands, when there is a get together for all ex-pupils of the school through the ages. The Friday reunion is for the class of 1960 plus a couple from other years close to that year.
A number of the former pupils are still living in the area while some will travel considerable distances to be there. Three of the attendees are brave enough to bring their wives with them At the main reunion there will also a visit to the school - sherry in the former headmaster's garden (Big School, if wet.) When the pupils of 1960 arrived at Heversham much of the M6 had yet to be built - in fact it was all seeen as something of a treat to go on the motorway by coach when there was twice a term swimming at Lancaster Baths.
During the summer months there was swimming at Kendal Baths and for the boarders swimming in the Kent estuary. Surprisingly no-one was ever drowned.
The Crooklands, where the weekend dinners will take place, was a tiny rural public house which was used by boys from the school for illegal drinking - both underage and breaking school rules.
To be caught drinking then was to have six strokes of the cane - smoking was four strokes for the first offence and six for the second.
Hoping to be at the event are: Trevor Barber Chris Bland Peter Broomby Ian Clarke John Duncan Jon Hackett Chris Harrison + Wife Ralph (Geoff) Heavyside Colin High Clive Horswill Stephen Hoyle + Wife Alan Irving Bob Sim Bob Wormald + Wife plus Peter Hawkins Leigh Robinson Kim Mayger Peter Townley
