ULVERSTON town councillors have called for police to get tough on cyclists and skateboarders who speed along footpaths.

Coun Colin Hodgson told the latest meeting he had received many complaints and the situation was at its worst in Canal Street.

"There they have no entrance halls and, if you are stepping out of your door and are suddenly confronted with that, it's not very pleasant."

Coun Norman Bishop-Rowe said Ulverston police were "stretched to the limit" and unless more funding was found they could not control such problems.

"I tried to call the police station last week and it was closed," he said.

Coun Elaine Marshall-Bennett praised the police response to problems of noise, foul language and racing cars on Booth's car-park.

"They visited every resident on Oubas Hill and have been back to see if there was improvement," she said.
