A MINI recycling wave has hit Eden as more than 250 green-thinking residents put their orders in for compost bins made entirely from recycled plastic bottles.
With one third of all typical household refuse being recyclable organic waste, people will be able to use a lot of their rubbish to create rich, natural garden compost - and a large proportion of refuse will not be sent to landfill sites.
Eden District Council joined forces with recycled plastic product-supplier LINPAC Environmental to offer residents more than 50 per cent discount on the cost of home compost bins.
Bins pre-ordered by residents will be collected during composting roadshow events on September 30.
These will be at Southend Road car park, Penrith (9am to 12.30pm), and South Tynedale Railway Station car park, Alston, (2.30pm to 5.30pm), and on October 1 at Broad Close car park, Appleby (9am to 12.30pm) and Christian Head car park (2.30pm to 5.30pm).
Deborah Garnett, council recycling officer, said that there would be a limited number of bins for sale at each of the events for people who missed the order deadline.
