BUSINESS rivals cast aside their commercial differences to join forces for the first time in a bid to raise money for a worthy cause.

The impact of cyclones and floods in Punnor, southern India, led the bosses of three Kendal Mint Cake manufacturers to swing into action and fund-raise for new sleeping accommodation at a home for young children.

They raised more than £3,500 at the marathon fund-raising event, which lasted three hours and was supported by the companies' suppliers, last Friday.

They came

Peter McCafferty, manager of Quiggins on Low Fellside, was up against Shane Barron, of Romney's and Andrew Wilson, of Wilson's, who each hit 1,000 golf balls at Kendal Driving Range.

Mr McCafferty said they used old Hickory golf clubs from the 1800s to set the ball rolling along with replica old golf balls thanks to Past Masters, of Burton-In-Lonsdale.

Representatives from the companies then teed off for a round of golf at Kendal Golf Club, with the losers contributing extra cash to the funds.

John Barron of Romney's won with 37 points, beating Mr McCafferty by three points.
