PEOPLE who are part of the great submarine tradition in Furness can now give money to help families of victims of the Kursk submarine tragedy in Russia.

A fund has been set up with donation boxes at the reception of the Gazette offices in Ulverston and Kendal.

John Houlding, national secretary of the submariners association, who lives in Barrow, is organising the local collection and said all money raised would go directly to the families of victims.

"Most families in this area have sons or husbands involved in building or working on submarines, there is a strong affiliation to the submarine service.

"Next year it is 100 years since they designed, built and launched the Holland 1 in Barrow which was the first submarine.

"We feel strongly for people who suffered and their wives and families who are suffering now."
