CUMBRIA Police are warning members of the public that bogus police officers have been operating in the area.
Two men dressed in luminous vests, posing as police officers stopped the driver of a Silver-Blue Ford Mondeo near Keswick and told him that he was being issued with an on-the-spot fine for speeding.
The man paid a £50 fine and was told to produce his driving documents at Carlisle Police Station.
Only when he arrived at the station the next day did it became apparent that the fine was not genuine.
The incident occurred on the A66 near Keswick on Monday morning at around 8am and the two men were driving a white Vauxhall Vectra type vehicle.
Cumbria Police would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who has been similarly approached and wish to remind the public that on no occasion would genuine police officers demand on-the-spot payment of a fine.
