DEVELOPERS who are obliged to provide ten affordable homes as part of a larger development in Ulverston should not be allowed to turn them into 'a ghetto', according to district councillors.
The proposal to build 81 homes on the site of the former High Carley Hospital, made by Daybasic Ltd, the former High Carley Developments Company, was granted planning permission in March.
But as South Lakeland district councillors examined plans of the latest phase of the development last week, concerns were raised about the position of the ten less-expensive homes, which were plotted towards the rear of the development against a wall.
Coun Bob Bolton said: "The issue is why those homes should be segregated and the people in them made to feel they are something different."
Coun Malcolm Alston said the council should not allow the formation of ghettos on housing estates, especially in the light of the present government's platform on social inclusion.
SLDC's development control sub-committee voted to approve the plans subject to further negotiations by director of amenities and development Martin Jayne.
