BIG names in pop and comedy are heading to the region in the new year including strange but curiously talented performer Julian Cope and the thinking girl's boy band Shed Seven.

Comedian Craig Charles, famed for his years aboard Red Dwarf - among other things - will be bringing his unique stand-up comedy to Whitehaven Civic Hall on January 25, followed by Cope and Shed Seven in April.

The two pop acts are also set to put in an appearance at The Platform, Morecambe, in the spring.

Cope, who became well known for his unique performances as front man of The Teardrop Explodes, produced the type of music which went against the grain in the 1980s and he has been doing so ever since.

When much of the north was exporting the type of music which required the wearing of hooded tops, Cope was wearing his hair in a side ponytail and straying into the strange lunar-landscape of experimental pop.

Perhaps Mr Cope is an acquired taste but if its rainbows you are after Shed Seven could be more your thing.

Following their festival warm up gig in Blackpool's Winter Gardens last summer and popular appearances at Lancaster's Sugarhouse, Shed Seven are fast becoming a regional favourite.
