THE 'Oscars' of care training have been presented and Emma Stephenson and Kelly Haygarth from the area have been recognised in the national awards.
Emma Stephenson, home manager at Mersebeck Residential Home in Carnforth, was named runner-up for the Care Practitioner of the Year Award, and Kelly Haygarth, care assistant at Beamsmoor in Sedbergh, was highly commended in the Young Care Practitioner of the Year category.
The Care For Older People Awards 2000 ceremony was held in London and presented by well-known agony aunt Claire Rayner.
Emma has worked at Meresbeck for ten years and was delighted to have been recognised in the prestigious awards.
"I was nominated by my NVQ assessor and David and Sheila Dearney, the owners of Meresbeck, and I was thrilled with my award.
I like to make sure all the residents are happy and well cared for and it is always want I wanted to do," said 25-year-old Emma.
Kelly, who was nominated by her manager Elizabeth Close and NVQ tutor Daphne Peel, said she "couldn't believe it" when she was shortlisted for her award.
"I think it is because I am so young to have completed the NVQ," said the 22-year-old from Sedbergh, who has successfully completed an NVQ Level 2 and 3 in direct care.
"I am hoping to do more NVQ training," she added, explaining: "I work well with people and enjoying helping people with their needs.
It can sometimes be quite difficult but I try never to get too serious otherwise it would be difficult to cope - I'm probably too laid back for my own good."
