A JOINT initiative in Ulverston is endeavouring to ensure a green Christmas for the people of Furness by providing a Christmas Tree recycling scheme.
An area of Ford Park in Ulverston has been cordoned off in readiness for the twelfth night, enabling people to put their trees to good use rather than throwing them away.
Members of the Community Action Group, a group for people with learning disabilities, which is part of Furness and Cartmel Day Services, have pioneered the scheme.
Rachel Martin, supervisor of Day Services said: "South Lakeland District Council will provide a shredder and environmental group the British Trust Conservation Volunteers will shred the trees.
BTCV will use the shredded trees to mark out paths and complete other projects in the Ulverston area so the trees are not just disappearing into nowhere land.
We wanted to get involved with a project which would benefit the community and we learned that Ulverston had a poor recycling record so decided to promote this project."
