A RAFT of road safety proposals aimed at reducing traffic speeds through an area of Kendal have been put forward by residents and welcomed by town councillors.

People who live in and around Greenside have drawn up a list of recommendations for Kendal's Traffic Steering Group to consider and town councillors gave their backing to the proposals at their meeting on Monday.

The main aim of the proposals is to cut down on the number of speeding cars heading into Kendal and they include:

- A mini-roundabout at the junction with High Tenterfell and Bankfield Road.

- A series of rumble strips to precede the existing 30mph speed limit signs at the top of Greenside.

- SLOW markings laid on red patches spaced at 50 yard intervals for the 200 yards following the commencement of the speed limit.

- A new footway at the side of Beast Banks between Belmont and Serpentine Road.

- A footway build-out at the top of Beast Banks to help pedestrians cross Brigsteer Road.

Coun Tony Rothwell said motorists were prone to speeding on what was a long straight, downhill section of road.

"I hope these proposals go ahead as soon as possible," he said.

Coun Graham Vincent said "half of Kendal" would be pleased to see a mini-roundabout at the High Tenterfell and Bankfield Road junction which had been the scene of many accidents over the years.

"It's miraculous that I don't recall any deaths there," he said.

Consultations are also taking place about residents' parking and the details are included in a separate leaflet which is being supplied to each household in the area.
