THE essentials of using an ice axe will be the subject of a series of one-day courses.
The emphasis will be on the importance of the ice axe as a piece of winter hill walking equipment.
Organised by the Lake District National Park Authority, the courses are designed for individuals rather than clubs and societies and will run weekly from January 20 to March 10.
Park ranger Scott Henderson said: "The correct use of an ice axe is an essential part of safety while hill walking in winter.
People should also ring the Weatherline to check on conditions setting out."
