BRANTHWAITE wanted a win over the top top, Kent and Arnside, to make their presence felt in the title picture in the Kendal Sports Westmorland Badminton League.
They made a brave fist, taking six and seven games off their two rivals respectively, but a 26-point gap has opened up to Branthwaite in third place.
Kent have played one more game than Arnside, who are 11 points to the good at present.
Hutton Croft are poised to challenge Strickland for top spot in Division 2 after wide-margin wins over ambleside and Ingleton.
Strickland had two convincing wins themselves, but Hutton Croft have a gamei n hand.
Division 3 leaders Sedgwick could beat Hutton Croft A only 10-8 which offered some heart to Grange A who are in pursuit of the top team.
Branthwaite B made up ground on Heverhsam A in Division 4 with a good win that took them nine points within the leaders, who have played one match fewer.
In Division 5, it is still nip and tuck between Heversham B and Grange B for top spot.
