Sir, For the 19th successive year, the Rotary Club of Upper Eden will be conducting the 23-mile Yomp on Sunday, June 3, round our local fells, starting and ending in Kirkby Stephen.

Quite considerable sums of money are raised for local, national and international charities each year from entry fees for the Yomp.

Participants in the Yomp have increased to some 700 individuals and, in the future, we hope to increase numbers to 1,000 which we feel will be entirely manageable.

To cover the initial costs of organising the Yomp each year, which include printing, postage, trophies, banners, markers, and refreshments for the participants, we are looking for sponsorship totalling some £1,500.

While we do not, of course, expect any individual company to cover the whole sum, I am writing to ask if any of your readers will consider helping us with sponsorship.

Suitable reference to any sponsorship is acknowledged on entry forms and other promotional material or, indeed, in some other way which would be jointly acceptable to you and the rotary club.

The Yomp is a recognised event on the calendars of the Fell runners Association and the Trail Runners Association and attracts their classification BL.

There are 15 manned checkpoints around the well-marked course which are in touch with the base, and in the last 18 years there have been no major accidents or casualties.

We would receive the unqualified assistance of the local Mountain Rescue team in the event of any emergency.

We award 17 trophies to teams and individuals, which include members of the public, schools, and serving members of HM Forces.

Additionally, each entrant who finishes the course receives a certificate.

If anyone would like further information or to discuss the matter in more detail, please contact me on 015396-23646.
