ULVERSTON Ladies sneaked a winning goal in the dying seconds to deny Kendal Ladies in a 2-1 defeat at Queen Katherine School , but the losers were still pleased with the spirit and commitment shown in their first Netherwood League game of 2001.
Kendal produced their best defending and marking this season to keep Ulverston at bay for long periods and it was good to see Ros Denby back, making a guest appearance for the side, and showing all her familiar flair.
Midfielder Jo Martin and winger Nikki Lester got through some good channelling work and when play broke down goalkeeper Julie Ashworth was on her mettle to preserve the deadlock with the telling save.
It was deep into the second half when Ulverston struck from short-corner routine but Kendal came back with one of their own, Satah Baron linking with Jo Robinson before Andrea Elvey put Baron in with a shooting opportunity she took well.
In the elation from scoring, Kendal perhaps felt they might go on and win the match and let their defensive resolve slip.
Ulverston capitalised and conjured up a fine solo goal in the last minute that sealed a victory when a draw would have probably been a fairer reflection of the play.
