A BOUNDARY Commission proposal to move Broughton from Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency into the Copeland seat, met with objections from South Lakeland District Council.

Opposing the proposal, the council's director of administration, Jim Morrison, said the western boundary of the Broughton ward, which followed the Duddon river, was an ancient one.

It was still the boundary between SLDC and Copeland Borough Council.

Broughton area residents did not travel north-west for services of any kind, said Mr Morrison.

"It is about 50 miles to the main town of Whitehaven, on a tortuous route which hugs the coastline, and only 32 miles to Kendal, to the constituency office," he said.

He added that it was the third time in 20 years that the commission had proposed moving Broughton into Copeland - and he hoped this would be the last.

Coun Jim Webster, of Low Furness, argued that both Broughton and Crake Valley should be included in the Barrow and Furness constituency.

Both had historical and modern links to the Furness area, he said.

Most of the adult population were employed in the Low Furness area, in firms such as Glaxo Wellcome, BAE, Kimberley Clark and other smaller business units.
