UNIONS and management meet at GlaxoSmithKline's Ulverston plant on Wednesday to discuss 110 redundancies announced last November.

The meeting, which will be held on the North Lonsdale Road site and is not open to the public, will be attended by the site director, senior representatives of each trades union from the Ulverston site and the union regional officers.

The job losses, which Glaxo blamed on increasingly tough competition and pricing pressures in the pharmaceutical industry, came on top of 60 redundancies last summer.

The company, which employs 1,300 workers in Ulverston, hopes the cuts will be made through voluntary early retirement or redundancy.
