POLICE have set-up a special unit to fight vehicle crime in South Lakeland as part of their 'Operation Radiator' initiative.
Although car crime figures show that the number of reported incidents of vehicle crime in South Lakeland and Furness was 51 in December 2000, compared to 53 incidents in the same month in 1999, officers say motorists need to continue to improve their security and report any suspicious activity.
A new three officer dedicated unit will provide crime prevention advice to motorists, as well as taking action to deter car theives.
PC Alison Westmorland, who is involved in the operation, said: "This initiative will see a dedicated team of officers targeting vehicle crime, including patrolling car parks and lay-bys.
We will be advising people on how to minimise the risks of becoming a victim of car crime, such as taking their valuables with them.
"Although a large part of car crime in South Lakeland occurs during the holiday season, car criminals do operate in this area during the winter.
Operation Radiator will be reminding motorists to help us by remaining vigilant."
