SHAP Memorial Hall was packed for the performance of The Dawn of the Firefawn, a production by NTC Theatre.
The Shaun Prendergast play explores the legend that deep in the hills of Northumbria, the gifts of the magi-gold, frankincense and myrrh lie hidden.
Ancient folklore and legends are brought to life, with King Arthur fighting to replace the old myths and superstitions of the Druids.
The story follows the adventures of the Firefawn, a creature of Faith and Purity created by the Saltcrone on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, to help in the struggle to safeguard the three gifts of the Light Child.
The riddle of an amulet given to her by her creator, leads her, together with her servant the Cloudcalf, over the Bridge of Whispers to Glastonbury, and the land of the Iceni, where she meets the many headed Hippocamp who, once freed from his captivity, flies the Firefawn and her servant back to Lindisfarne.
Throughout their travels, they are pursued by the evil force, Badb Catha who attempts to trick them and thwart their success.
Finally, as in traditional fairy stories, good overcomes evil, and the Firefawn is able to give the gold to King Arthur.
The minimal stage set, with special sound, smoke and light effects added to this mystical and magical story, as did the excellent costumes and make-up.
The lead role of the Firefawn was taken by Helen Mortimer and that of Cloudcalf by Zoe Lambert.
The performance formed part of North Pennine Highlights Rural Touring programme, and all profits will be for Shap School.
