KENDAL'S name could be up in lights on rail information boards across Britain if plans to re-Christen Oxenholme station get the go-ahead.
Kendal Tourist Group, which is working to raise the town's profile as a holiday destination, is behind the idea.
It believes that changing Oxenholme station's name to Kendal - the Lake District, would help persuade tourists to see the town as a destination in its own right, rather than as a gateway to the Lake District.
Members of South Lakeland District Council's economic development committee were invited to consider the suggestion.
Coun Elizabeth Braithwaite objected to the idea.
"It is well known as Oxenholme station, it is not Kendal," she said.
But Coun Andrew Shine said he would support the plan if it were to benefit the local economy.
Members voted to discuss the issue at a later meeting when Oxenholme's ward member Coun Philip Ball had had the opportunity to consult local people.
