VILLAGE youngsters are enjoying games of football on the 'kickabout' space created specially for them.
Oxenholme's new community association drove the project forward, because some residents were concerned about older children playing football and cricket, and riding their bicycles, on the younger children's playground, at Bolefoot.
Some parents and grandparents removed toddlers and youngsters from the play area, because they were concerned for their safety, explained association treasurer Jim Burke.
However, villagers realised that older children had nowhere else to go and, rather than spoil their fun by simply banning them from the playground, they decided to take a positive approach.
With help and advice from district councillor Philip Ball, Gwen Murfin of Hallgarth Residents' Association and the neighbourhood forum, they formed an association.
They asked South Lakeland District Council if a 'kickabout' space could be created on a plot of council-owned land, close to the Bolefoot playground, where villagers walked their dogs.
The plot has now been levelled and grassed and, when the weather improves, five-a-side goal posts and fences will hopefully be put up.
"We've got to the situation where we are waiting for spring, when the goal posts will be put up and fencing will hopefully be completed," said Mr Burke, who praised the support of SLDC.
"The older lads and lasses have got a ball area which will allow the toddlers to enjoy the facilities on the playground."
Coun Philip Ball, who represents Oxenholme, said he welcomed the community initiative, and the help of SLDC staff.
